Buchanan has an art center, community theater, Preservation Society, garden club and more.
DEMOGRAPHICS: Along the Lakefront, from Indiana north to the Upper Peninsula, approximately 300 hundred miles of shore line, are tourist oriented cities, towns, and villages. Between Buchanan and the Lake are weekend farms and country houses owned by Chicago and Indianapolis residents. There is a large ex-pat Chicago community throughout the area.
South of the Michigan - Indiana border are a series of old industrial towns from Elkhart to LaPorte with a combined population of around 500,000. Metro Chicago has 9.5 million. The hilly terrain around Buchanan has orchards, fruit farms, wineries, and farms growing corn, wheat, oats, and soy beans. Buchanan’s city center is criss-crossed by an 1850s Mill Race and the trout friendly, McCoy Creek. Buchanan has four National Register Historic Districts.
Buchanan hosts a popular Jazz Festival in June. Over a thousand people attended last year’s festival. In 2026 the festival will be extended to be a two day event held the weekend of June 20th and 21st. The Midsummer reference notes the solstice. Being on the edge of the Eastern time zone, the sun sets around 9:30 pm on this weekend.
FEATURES: New to the show world will be shallow 2’ x 20’ perimeter booths for hanging and exhibiting art. There will be a bar on premises throughout the show. Set-up Thursday and Friday with staggered load ins. Because of Notre Dame, chain hotel rooms with parking are abundant. Lakefront options are varied. Pleasant luxury can be found at the marinagrandresort.com . The Buchanan Jazz and Blues Festival kicks off Saturday afternoon. It’s free lawn seating on the Buchanan Common. Bring a beach towel or twin blanket. It’s a short walk from the show. Buchanan has a number of restaurants downtown on Front Street, near the show and the Common. Exhibitors will receive a list. Lehman’s Farmhouse, a micro-brewery and restaurant, lehmansfarmhouse.com, lies in proximity to the show tent. Our building has new rest rooms. PROMOTION: The plan relies heavily upon social media focused on Instagram and Facebook. Exhibitors will be asked for their IG and FB. Fernwood and Cannavista have massive e-mail lists for blasts. Because the show falls under the umbrella of The Buchanan Midsummer Jazz & Antiques Fest, we’ll have good television coverage on Friday afternoon to hit the evening news features. The broadcast media market is South Bend. A small budget will be used to reach the affluent families along the Lake and the Saugatuck Douglas market via print media. Extensive use of sponsorships on at least two regional NPR affiliates will also be used as well as press release saturation. Finally, the show has support from the Buchanan Downtown Development Authority, Buchanan’s economic development arm.
DRINKS: Buchanan has a Social District which includes the Downtown National Register Historic District as well as the Clark NRHD, the show site. Social Districts in Michigan allow consumers to openly consume alcohol purchased from participating establishments in the public way. Buchanan is known for its five cannabis dispensaries. Downtown are Cannavista Wellness and Zen Leaf.
